Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon is very fragmented in
the United States. Several different companies own copyrights
to it and because of this fragmentation many different versions
and credits exists.
For example, the word "Bishoujo" is spelled
as "Bishojo" in the Mark
C. MacKinnon Sailor Moon RPG Game and Resource Book. Thus
just looking at the word "Bishojo/Bishoujo" (meaning
Pretty) comes in various spellings.
*** Now the fun begins: (All pictures on this
page comes from my BSSM collection) ***
The
initial episodes of Sailor Moon in America were dubbed by DIC
Entertainment. DIC's version of Sailor Moon was the first
to air on public television in 1995.
DIC somehow involved Disney Studios in the production
of Sailor Moon and if you look at the Doom
Tree Series VHS tapes, you'll see how the production studio
is the Disney Studio.
But
if you look at the Doom
Tree Series DVD collection, you'll see that the rights are
held by ADV
(AD Vision). Are you confused yet???
Well, that's how many long-time Sailor Moon fans
feel. To simplify things, just remember that although ADV hold
copyrights to the DVD version of Season 2, DIC was the
original company responsible for the dubbing of Season 1 and half
of Season 2. How do I know this? Because.
Anyways, ADV
(AD Vision) also hold rights to the original Japanese verison
and subtitled it into English. *gasp* ADV finally put in their
own effort to producing Sailor Moon! Although it's only a subtitled
version, it's something!
Next,
Pioneer Entertainment, now called Geneon
Entertainment also held rights to it.
Pioneer Entertainment owns the copyrights to the
three Sailor Moon movies. They also hold copyrights to Seasons
3 and 4 of Sailor Moon in the United States.
And
let's not forget all the wonderful fansubs versions! One of the
most popular fansub was by VKLL.
(Which I own the entire seasons 3 ~ 5 in VHS copies.)
Lastly,
don't forget the MANGA version of Sailor Moon, all translated
by TokyoPop.
The Manga version was the original version of Sailor Moon. The
manga was such a huge hit, it just had to be made into an anime!
All anime fans should be aware that it is impossible
to keep EVERYTHING the same between the manga and anime. ( Just
like in movies, Jurassic Park the book and Jurassic Park the Movie
has MANY differences). But I like to consider both the manga
and anime versions as their own interpretations of Naoko's vision
of Sailor Moon.
With all that said, I will
be listing WHERE I get my Sailor Moon information here at the
Sailor Palace. Either from DIC, VKLL, ADV, Tokyopop, or Pioneer
(now Geneon).
For the newer American fans of Sailor Moon,
you must understand that Sailor Moon ORIGINALLY started in Japan
by Toei Animation.
If there is a TRUE verison, it would be the Japanese Version.
(And since Japanese and Chinese languages have similarities,
I can understand more of Sailor Moon than someone who can't speak
either language. Although parts of Sailor Moon is still lost in
translation for me.)
The AMERICAN version first aired on FOX in September
1995. (And let's just say that FOX aired the 1st episode of Season
Two instead of Season One). So from the very beginning, Sailor
Moon fans can see that there's tragedy to come for our beloved
anime.
American
Sailor Moon first aired around the same time as Pokemon.(My
personal guess is that the American market was looking for morning
cartoons to show kids and they thought Sailor Moon would be like
Pokemon. They were SOOO wrong!)
The original Sailor Moon is NOT meant for kiddie
audience!
Due to that misconception by the American corporations,
fans since 1995 can attest to how many road blocks & changes
Sailor Moon has been through.
With so many versions, some fans believe the American
version is better. While others just want to bask in the original
Japanese. Some fans (like me) have watched ALL of them and hope
that we can all somehow get along.
At Gemelle's
Sailor Palace, I try to cover both the Japanese and American
anime versions (I try to avoid getting into the Manga version,
it's just too much to handle!). And like a good English essay,
I always thoroughly conduct my research and quote my sources.
So before you get all upset and say that the information
at Gemelle's Sailor
Palace are wrong, PLEASE ASK YOURSELF, "WHAT VERSION
ARE YOU WATCHING?????"
Of course, there are always chances of spelling
and grammar errors at my Sailor Palace. So if you find a spelling
or grammar error, I would appreciate an
email.
My recommendation is for all Sailor Moon fans to
watch the ORIGINAL Japanese anime and READ the manga if you want
to truly understand the complexity and depth of Bishoujo Senshi
Sailor Moon. And NEVER forget about Sailor Moon! We must always
SOS! (Save Our Sailors!)
