AD Vision (ADV) produced Season 1 pictureand Season 2 pictureof Sailor Moon in its original Japanese format. Basically you can call it the official English SUBTITLED version.

Note: Do NOT confuse SUBtitled version with the DUB version. The dub version is with American voice stars. Meanwhile the SUBtitled verison is with the original Japanese voices, but with English word flashing across the bottom of the screen.

pictureUnlike Fansubs (which are subtitles done by fans of the anime), the ADV subs are the official corporate/professional subtitled version of Sailor Moon. Which means the ADV Sailor Moon subs have the full financial backing of the ADV corporation, they have the resources to hire professional translators to subtitle the anime.

Gemelle's Review on the ADV Subs:

The ADV subs are decent translations. However, much of the details and direct translations were left out. For example, when Saphir calls Prince Dimande - "nii-san", ADV translated it as "Dimande".

The word "nii-san" should have been translated to "older brother". Since in the Asian language, younger siblings address their older siblings by their "titles", NOT by their names. Otherwise it would be disrespectful.

Also it would help the viewers better understand the relationships between the characters had ADV translated the words "nii-san" (older brother) or "nee-san" (older sister) more often.

pictureNext ADV should have kept more consistancy between the spelling of the names. For example, when Chibi-Usa called Sailor Pluto "Puu" in the subtitles, her name was spelled as "Pu" on the inserted episode guide. So how should it be spelled? "Puu"? or "Pu"? I would expect ADV to choose ONE spelling of the same name.

Overall, it feels like ADV rushed the production of the Sailor Moon subtitled version. They could have taken better care to add extras into the DVD. Instead there are NO extras of any kind. It's almost like someone used a DVD software, added subtitles to Saior Moon, added a menu root, packaged it in a cheap DVD box and tried to sell it for $149.

pictureThe only thing I found interesting in the ADV version is the episode guide insert. The insert contains episode summaries and it lists when important moments are in the anime.

Overall, Gemelle rates the ADV Subtitle Version -> "B".
