Season 1 of Sailor Moon (US Version)

Queen Beryl Queen Beryl is the Queen of the Negaverse.  During the time of the Moon Kingdom, Queen Beryl broke out of her Negaverse and destroyed the Moon Kingdom.   But thanks to Queen Serenity, evil Queen Beryl was trapped inside the power of the Imperium Silver Crystal.  But Queen Beryl could not be destroyed. Instead she was held imprisoned within the power of the Imperium Silver Crystal (my spelling of the word "Imperium" comes from Mark C. MacKinnon's Sailor Moon RPG & Resource Book. Of course, since then I've also seen it spelled as "Emperium", "Empyrean", "Emperian". I will just call this crystal the "Silver Crystal" from now on. At least we can all agree how to spell the word "silver" ^_^ )

Inside the same crystal are the Moon Princess Serena and her royal court. With the last of Queen Serenity's powers, she sent Serena and the others into a future time on Earth, hoping that the evil Negaverse will remain trapped forever. Unfortunately, Queen Beryl found a way to escape the power of the crystal and tried once more to conquer the universe.  Now Queen Beryl's mission is to seek the seven Rainbow Crystals.   The Rainbow Crystals will somehow reveal the location of the Imperium Silver Crystal.

(Voice Star for Queen Beryl is: Naz Edwards.)

In addition to Queen Beryl, there are her Four Generals :

Jedite Jedite is the first general chosen by Queen Beryl to gather energy from Earth to strengthen the Negaverse. Like every general to follow, Jedite uses monsters to help him gather energy from Earth.   And like every other general, the Sailor Scouts will foil up his evil plans.   Jedite is unable to complete his mission and is frozen by Queen Beryl.   But right before he is crystalized, he discovered the secret identities of the Sailor Scouts.   Luckily for the Sailor Scouts, Queen Beryl froze Jedite before he could reveal their identities.

(Voice Star for Jedite is: Tony Daniels who was also the voice for Wiseman)

NefliteThe next general that is chosen to gather energy from Earth is Neflite. Neflite uses the power of the stars (aka: astrology) to attempt to defeat Sailor Moon.  He also tries to disguise himself as Tuxedo Mask.

But during his mission, he fell in love with Serena's best friend - Molly Baker (US Version) / Naru (Japanese Version).  Who would have thought an evil villain would fall in love with an ordinary human girl?  Well, Molly/Naru (see picture on the right) stole the heart of Neflite with her kindness.

As Neflite got closer to the truth of Sailor Moon's true identity, Zoycite (another of Queen Beryl's Generals) interferes.  Zoycite sends three female henchmen to capture Neflite's black crystal (a crystal of which has the power to detect the Silver Crystal).

In battle, Neflite fought the three evil henchmen, but instead of completely defeating them, he allowed them to escape.  His attention was focused on getting Molly to safety. When the three henchmen discovered Neflite once again the final battle began.

In this final battle, the henchmen injures Neflite and stabs him with their energy draining thorns.  Molly tries to pull the thorns out, but the henchmen blasted one more bolt of energy at the trapped Neflite. This fatal blow made Neflite drop the black crystal, which Zoycite immediately grabbed, and Neflite faded away in Molly's arms.

ZoyciteThe image on the left is of Zoycite. In the American Version, Zoycite is dubbed as a female character, but in the original Japanese version, Zoycite was a male character.  So yes Sailor Moon fans ... Zoycite and Malachite are gay characters.  But that would have been too much for the American audience, imagine the number of phone calls to the television stations from parents!

Anyways, Zoycite and Malachite are able to get most of the seven Rainbow Crystals.  To get the rest, they had to trap Tuxedo Mask (who had a few of the rainbow crystals himself).  So Zoycite disguises herself as Sailor Moon.   When Tuxedo Mask came to rescue "Sailor Moon", Zoycite stabs Tuxedo Mask with an ice crystal.  With an injured Tuxedo Mask, Zoycite reveals herself as an imposter Sailor Moon.  She then corners Tuxedo Mask and with a gust of her "Zoy" power. At that moment, Tuxedo Mask's mask fell off for a brief second.  But that one second was long enought for Queen Beryl (who was watching the battle from her cystal ball) to realize Tuxedo Mask's true identity - Prince Darien.

(Voice Star for Zoycite is: Kirsten Bishop, who is also the voice of Emerald.)

malachite.gif (58391 bytes)  During Zoycite's final battle with Tuxedo Mask on the Starlight Tower, Zoycite disobeyed Queen Beryl's orders to not harm Prince Darien.  Instead Zoycite disobeys the Queen's orders and nearly kills Prince Darien. As punishment, Queen Beryl destroys Zoycite.  As Zoycite fades away in Malachite's arms, Malachite becomes the last and final general for Queen Beryl.

After the death of Zoycite, Malachite is forced to work together with Prince Darien, who has become brainwashed by Queen Beryl to become an Evil Prince Darien.   There are no pictures of Evil Prince Darien because I do not consider him as a "villain".

Now, the defeat of Malachite came when he confronts Sailor Moon and the Sailor Scouts. Malachite orginally wanted to trap somewhere in time. Instead, the Crescent Moon Wand took control and transported them into a time and place on the Moon. (In the American Version, they were taken into the past by 1000 years - this is stated on the back of the DIC produced VHS for the episode titled "The Past Returns") It is at this moment, their pasts become revealed. Once the Sailor Scouts learned of their past, they are transported right back to Malachite. With their newfound knowledge of the sacrafice made on the moon, Sailor Moon refuses to lose to Malachite. With a burst of strength and energy, Sailor Moon reflected Malachite's attack and swung it back at him. Thus Malachite was killed by the backfire of his own attack.

Then the final battle is between Queen Beryl. It is a very exciting battle. Just know that the original Japanese battle is TWO FULL episodes long (episodes 45 and 46 of 200), while the US version is only one episode titled "Day of Destiny". You'll have to see this battle for yourself! No words can describe how great this battle!

The battle ends with Queen Beryl's defeat and with the Moon Princess's death. But like her mother, she is also granted one wish. Princess Serenity's wish is for everyone's lives to return to the way it once was, before all the battling and drama of the Negaverse. Then as she passes away, the Silver Crystal grants her wish and everyone starts the next morning as if nothing has happened. With no memories of their power or their fight against the Negaverse. All of this will have to come back to them as the series move into the 2nd season. Usagi first meets Mamoru when she accidentally tosses away a crumbled "F" paper at his head.

In the American Version, "Beryl is blasted back into the Negaverse." Then everyone magically starts the entire day over with no memory of what happened. Except Serena happens to volunteer in a hospital and that's how she meets up with Darien again.

Then there's the public service announcement of not giving up! Also stick up for your friends, they don't give up on you, so don't give up on them! Sailor Moon Says!
