Clever Cam Installation Help - Web Cam Help
Many thanks to Jesse for sending me a Clever Cam 360 in the mail.
It's a really nice piece of equipment if ArcSoft gave the correct
VWF (video for windows file) drivers to run the camera. I spent
two hours searching the Internet for help on the correct installation
of this digital cam/web cam. Instead of finding help, I found a
TON of complaints from consumers that can't even get their VideoImpression
2000 software to work properly ... a software that came standard
with the CleverCam! I found out that it doesn't work because it
lacked the necessary VWF file, the camera could not function as
a recording or a web cam device without the VWF file. So if you're
having trouble or if you know a friend that's having trouble with
the CleverCam 360 installation, please click on read more ...

360 Installation on July 30, 2003, click here to read.
Extended Entry Below
I scoured the web for the VWF file for the camera.
It was really tough because most of the zip files I found lacked
the main .dll file. Then I found the file, but I had to find a way
to get it installed into the actual VideoImpression part of the
software of the Clever Cam. So after all the tinkering around, everything
now works on my system. I've tested it on Yahoo Messenger and on
MSN's Netmeeting and it works fine.
The following is an explanation of what I did to
get my CleverCam 360 to work as a webcam. I have a 866 Mhz Pentium
III computer running on Windows ME. CleverCam will NOT work
on XP. Sorry to all those who have XP. You might as well
return the Clevercam and try to get a refund because it wasn't designed
for XP, this is stated on their own website, in tiny itty bitty
red font. In addition, I had to upgrade to Yahoo
Messenger 5.5 to get it to work on Yahoo Messenger.
I first went to Clevercam.com to get the most up-to-date
drivers. (which didn't really help). But I recommend that you might
as well start here, because that's what I had to do. Download the
drivers and then read the reinstallation guide. The drivers are
in zip format. You'll need to uninstall your original drivers, and
then install the new ones. Follow the guide they give you, it actually
works.
Download
drivers here.
Next step - you still can't work you webcam in PhotoImpression
because you lack the necessary VMF files in the correct directory
in your system. So I've already done the quest for the VMF files
and I'm going to list the link here:
Project
Mayo
At this site, download :
OpenDivX Install File (*.exe)
and Video For Windows dll Source
Run the OpenDivX File first.
Then unzip the Video for Windows dll Source.
Now you can't install it properly because this patch
is missing the most important file called the "DIVX.DLL" file. So
you now do a search in your C: drive, you should be able to find
that file because you just installed it with the previous program.
Once you find it in your search box, make a copy
of it and copy it into the divx4windows folder and the divx4windows/bin
folder. Copy it into these two places and then read the instructions
on "DivX Readme". Or you can just go to the "bin" folder. Right
mouse click on Divx.ini file and choose "Install".
That should install the VFW files into your computer.
However, the PhotoImpressions software doesn't know that you've
installed it. So what I did here is copy the entire contents of
the divx4windows files into the PhotoImpressions Folder 2002 in
your Program Files. I then copied DIVX.DLL and the DIV.ini file
into every folder I could find in the PhotoImpressions file. After
that, everything worked.
The only explanation I can give for this miracle
is that something I copied must have triggered the PhotoImpressions
folder to recognize the necessary VMF files. Then that's it ...
you may need to tinker around with it a bit depending on how your
system is setup. But that's what I did and everything now works
fine with the CleverCam 360. The video cam quality of the CleverCam
is actually EXCELLENT!! I've seen lots of webcams from friends but
nothing beats the quality on the CleverCam. I was simply shocked.
However when I take regular pictures on the clevercam, it's simply
garbage. The Clevercam was NOT designed to be a good digital camera.
However as a webcam, it's great.
I only wish that they gave everyone the proper software
to run their own Clevercam properly. Then you wouldn't be here reading
my babbling on how to get it to work for you. Oh by the way, don't
bother contacting their tech support. From what I've read, they
don't know what to do either. They're just as lost because they
don't know that the people who wrote the softwares didn't provide
all the necessary dll files to get the software to run properly.
Oh well, typical corporate America mistake. Make a product, but
don't provide all the things necessary with it to make it run. *rolls
eyes*

I am apparently doing this incorrectly.
I will try this again, but I am trying it on an imac with a virtual
pc on it. the Photoimpression seems to work ok but Video impression
still gives me problems. Can you give a bulletted version of this?
also why if video impression is the problem do you put the new divx4windows
folder into the photo impressions folder?
PS would this new item by Concord and aiptek called a minidv cam
work better? It is more expensive though, but you can video record
3 and half minutes of video and sound.

The instructions here are for
Clever Cam 360. It is NOT for the NEW clever cams which might have
different softwares and configurations. So before you follow my
instructions, please make sure you check which version of Clever
Cam you have.

Thanks for the site. My buddy
gave me his Clever Cam with just a USB port and no software. I've
downloaded mostly everything with the exception of the PhotoImpressions
(which I can't find) deal. Does one really need to download this?
I'm on a dial-up connection and this would take nearly 2 days to
complete download. Anybody out there know how to work the web camera
without this software, please let me know. Thanks.
