11/03/2002 Entry: "Gong
Li - To Live"
Ok, since I'm surfing at Amazon.com anyways, I thought I'd mention
this awesome movie by Gong Li called To
Live. This movie provides an incredibly accurate and unbiased
portrayal of what a commoner's life would be had one lived during
the Communist Revolution.
I understand there's a lot of resentment towards communism in the
Western world, the days of the "Red Scare" proves it all. As for
myself, all I know about communism is what's taught to me in a world
history class in 9th grade. So to see this movie and to see how
ordinary citizens in China really had no choice but to live in a
communist society really opened my eyes to their hardships.
Why am I bringing this up now?? Well lately, I've seen that there's
so much hate in the world due to racism, the last this world needs
is more hate due to political differences. I also know how many
awful B-rated asian movies are out on the market. I've seen way
too many cheesy kung-fu movies and those terrible mofia movies.
But To
Live by Gong Li is a remarkable chinese movie, one that's
NOT depressing, and yet shows what being a chinese
is all about during an era of unrest and civil war. It also shows
how just because someone lives in a communist country, it doesn't
make that someone an evil person. It just means that a person must
do what is necessary to live and survive.
Ok, I'll stop being the movie critic now. I just thought I'd share
a good movie that's difficult to find at your local Blockbuster
here at my website. To
Live - by Gong Li.
